Educating All Students for Success in Life
Greetings Trailside Families,
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! We are off to a great start! Students are smiling, learning routines, making new friends, and learning! It was great to see everybody at our Back-to-School Night, on the first day of school, and during our Open House.  We are proud of our Trailside Timberwolves!
Please join me in welcoming our new staff to Trailside.  Mrs. Erickson is our new Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Keller is returning to Trailside as our librarian, Mrs. Metzger is returning as our 3rd/4th grade combination teacher, Mrs. Jackson is our new band teacher, and Mrs. Stiles is our new Instructional Coach.  Mrs. Stiles is shared between Trailside and O’Malley Elementary. Welcome and welcome back!
Our newsletter, What's Howling at Trailside? has a new look! Here's a shout-out to Heather Marron at ASD Communications for guiding us through this process.  We now have the ability to share many of the wonderful things we do here at Trailside via photos!

Trailside is dedicated to the achievement of each and every student.  Attendance continues to be one of our top priorities. Daily attendance is critical to each student’s success.  We have learned that students who miss even a few days of school each month are at far greater risk of experiencing academic struggles and even dropping out of school in their middle and high school years.  Because attendance is so important, please send your child to school every day unless he or she has a contagious illness or is running a fever.
We have set a goal that every student in our school attends regularly.  Our goal is students will attend school at least 90% of the time. If you have attendance questions, please feel free to call our office staff or Nurse Donna at 742-5500.  We will also monitor each student’s attendance so we can work with families when the number of absences puts a student at risk.

This week I am meeting with each class to talk about and review our school-wide expectations and to also review information in our Student Handbook.  We do have copies in the front office if you would like to pick one up. The 2017-18 Elementary School Student Handbook can also be accessed online at,
Our annual school-wide evacuation drill to Service High School is scheduled for Friday, September 15, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Our 6th graders will escort our kindergarten students.  It is important for our students to know we have a safety plan in place and we will learn and become familiar with our alternate site in case of an emergency.
The Trailside PTA does many amazing things for our school. We are very appreciative of their support throughout the school year.  Please consider joining the PTA.
Again, WELCOME to another terrific year at Trailside! Thank you for your partnership and we look forward to an outstanding school year!  If you have any questions and or concerns please feel free to contact me.
Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Mary Ellison

Save the Date! Vision Screening is coming up Monday, September 25th.  The Lion’s Club will be at Trailside with their trained volunteers and equipment to conduct vision screenings on all K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and any new to district kids. This is an important health intervention that can detect vision issues, many of which can be corrected, if caught and addressed early enough.

Salutations from the library!
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year.  My name is Cindy Keller and I am thrilled to be your child’s librarian.  I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of the amazing Trailside community once again. For 20 years I was a classroom teacher, before embarking on a new adventure in the library.  I was the Huffman librarian for the past two years, but my neighborhood school called me back.  I couldn’t be happier. I taught many grades at Trailside Elementary where I walked to school with my kids, Ali and Max.  You may see me walking to work, thinking about how I “blinked” and now my kids are in high school, one graduating this year.

I am so appreciative to be working with such a great group of well behaved, ready to learn, excited to read elementary students.    Also thank you to so many families who have taken time out of your day to say hello and to the new families who have stopped in to introduce themselves.  Whether it is a simple quick hello in the parking lot while I’m on duty, walking through the halls, or you pop in, it is appreciated. This is a special community.

Your child will have one 30 minute library class a week.  In this time I will hopefully help instill a love of books, learning, and reading.  I will also begin teaching research skills and internet safety. In addition to your child’s one 30 minute library time a week, Trailside Timberwolves may check out books every Monday-Thursday from 9:00-9:30. They should have no excuses for not bringing home a book nightly to read.

The last two weeks of library have been busy and exciting. We focused on:

·  behavior expectations

·  checkout procedures

·  where to find books in the library

·  how to care and be responsible for books you borrow from the library

  • Ask your child “What are the three main sections in the library?”
  • Thank you for helping remind your child when their library day is
  • how to be responsible and keep track of books.

Typically you can expect your child to have 2-3 books checked out at a given time.

Once again I am ecstatic to be here and feel free to come in anytime.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) 2017-2018

The MAP Growth assessment, formerly known as Measures of Academic Progress or MAP, is replacing the AIMSweb assessment for Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) purposes at all ASD schools for grades 3-8 and at high school for Tier II and Tier III reading and mathematics students. MAP was piloted at ASD last year at comprehensive middle schools, grades 6-8, and in the spring at elementary schools, grades 5-6.

MAP Growth is an online assessment tool used for instructional purposes. MAP Growth is an adaptive assessment that provides each student a personalized testing experience with data that speaks to their individual progress and growth in mathematics and reading. Practice tests and accommodations are available. MAP Growth is an interim assessment and will be administered three times per year during the ASD Benchmark windows: fall, winter and spring. The fall 2017 window is September 5-25.
